South Portland Sanctuary
south Portland, Maine
This home was designed and built by the owner who is an architect. He and his wife had already done a considerable amount of work on the landscape including the creation of the beautiful, inner courtyard with stone walkways and a small pond. Rather than remove the existing vegetation and install a lawn, the homeowners chose to leave as much as the existing vegetation as possible when they built. So the house is nestled within a marshy meadow. We helped them to create gardens that enhance the spaces they had created. We wanted the gardens to feel harmonious with the unique architecture and the untamed surrounding landscape. Grasses and tall meadow perennials blend in with the existing meadow out front. Sedums, Alliums and other groundcovers thrive in the part sun courtyard and mirror the carpet of rugged succulents that grow on the green roof.
